Is Unitedhealthcare Vision The Same As Spectera

They are closely related. According to the UHC website, all providers in Specteras Eyecare Network also accept UnitedHealthcare vision.

UnitedHealthcare owns the Spectera network, which is made up of vision care providers for routine eye exams, prescription updates, glasses, contacts, and so on. They also provide coverage for vision emergencies through their medical network. The separation provides a clear division between the two types of eye care to simplify claims and billing for members.

    What About Contact Lens Prescriptions

You might be wondering: Is my contact lens prescription the same as my glasses prescription?

Not always! Your glasses sit at a slight distance away from your eyes, whereas contact lenses rest directly on your corneas. That difference in distance means their prescriptions might not match up.

Additionally, because contact lenses come with fixed parameters determined by their manufacturers, the doctor may need to adjust your accordingly. These adjustments can also differentiate your contact prescription from your glasses prescription.

Even if the values on your contact lens and glasses prescription are the same, your contact prescription needs to include the name of the brand youve been prescribed .

Your optometrist also needs to put additional information on your contact lens prescription related to fit. Thats rightyour contacts need to fit you, just like anything else you wear.

The two measurements you should also see on your contact lens prescription are:

Base Curve : The curvature of your contact lens, which should mold comfortably to the curvature of your natural eye. This measurement in millimeters always falls between the numbers 8 and 10.

Diameter : Just like in regular math, the diameter is the width of a contact lens in millimeters. Most contact lenses are between 13 and 15 mm wide.

    Schedule A Comprehensive Eye Exam

The annual eye exam included in your UnitedHealthcare vision plan is essential to eye health. Your UnitedHealthcare vision plan covers one eye exam per year, so start using your vision plan benefits right away with an eye exam.

During a comprehensive eye exam, an eye doctor checks your vision to see if you need glasses or a new prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses. An eye exam also includes a lot more than vision screening or a prescription, though.

The eye doctor examines your eyes to detect eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration. Your eyes can also reveal signs of other serious medical conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure.

Scheduling an eye exam helps you stay on top of your eye health and make sure your glasses or contacts are up to date. The eye doctor can also answer questions you may have about your eyes.

    Does Unitedhealthcare Medicare Cover Glasses

Protect your eyes from blue light exposure

UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans that offer vision benefits can help cover some of the vision care that Original Medicare doesnt cover.

Each plan also differs slightly in its cost and coverage. Some UnitedHealthcare Medicare plans may cover routine vision services such as eye exams in full.

Some of the vision benefits that may be offered can include:

    • Corrective glasses lenses
    • Glaucoma screenings
    • Annual diabetic retinal examinations

Each plan will include its own terms and conditions regarding glasses, contact lenses and other services, as well as the costs associated with approved vision care.

Unitedhealthcare Vision Insurance: At A Glance

    UnitedHealthcare Vision Insurance
    4 out of 5 stars
    A.M. Best Rating
    Premiums Starting at $11.40

UnitedHealthcare Vision is a relatively strong choice for vision benefits. It has a national network of more than 80,000 vision providers and offers coverage for all of the things that youd expect, including visits to the optometrist, frames, lenses, and contacts.

The insurer offers two different types of vision coverage, one for people who want to purchase either glasses or contact lenses and one for people who prefer to have both available. The plan that covers both glasses and contacts costs a bit more each month and otherwise offers almost identical coverage for the cost of eye exams, frames, and lenses.

Residents of most states can purchase insurance from UnitedHealthcare Vision without going through their employer. This can make it a good choice for the unemployed, self-employed, or those who dont get vision insurance from their job.

Look Into Eyeglasses That Suit Your Lifestyle

If youre like many people, you may spend hours at a time staring at a computer screen at work. That can lead to digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome, a condition with uncomfortable symptoms, including:

The good news is that you can reduce digital eye strain by wearing computer glasses designed to relieve focus stress from looking at computers, smartphones and tablets. Custom computer glasses contain anti-reflective coating and blue light filtering to ease digital eye strain.

You may already own a pair of inexpensive over-the-counter computer reading glasses that claim to filter blue light. For the best viewing comfort, you might want to stay away from cheap computer glasses you can buy online. Instead, go with what your eye doctor suggests at your annual eye exam.

Prices for computer glasses can be about the same as other prescription glasses but could be more, depending on the glasses you choose. Basic frames are affordable, but high-end frames, progressive lenses or multifocal lenses cost more.

Depending on which plan you have, your vision plan may cover single vision, bifocal and trifocal/lenticular lenses, including standard scratch-resistant coating for eligible lenses. Keep in mind that you may pay extra for computer glasses.

    What Does Unitedhealthcare Insurance Cover

There are two plan options available from UnitedHealthcare. The first plan, Plan A, starts at $11.40 per month. Plan B starts at $15.70 per month. You can add additional family members to the plans at the cost of $7.20 and $9.90, respectively.

Both plans cover the cost of a visit to the optometrist after you make a $10 copay. They also offer a $150 frame allowance and pay for eyeglass lensesincluding single vision, bifocal, and trifocal lenses, with scratch-resistant coatingafter a $10 copayment. Contact lenses from the select list are free every 12 months.

The major difference between the plans is that Plan A covers the cost of either glasses or contacts. Plan B covers the cost of both, so if you prefer to have both glasses and contacts, Plan B is the better plan for you.
