This is a review for eyewear & opticians in Chicago, IL:

“I joined yelp just so I could write this review. My 2 kids got their eyes checked at the Walmart vision center at Rolling Meadows last week by the new doctor there. This was the most thorough eye exam. My kids were so comfortable with this doctor. They were actually excited to have the tests done. They are usually scared of doctors. The eye exam including photos of the inside of their eyes only cost me $50. One of my kids needed glasses and it was only $38. I’m definitely going back there for my eye exam and will bring the rest of my family. This vision center is clean and organized and best of all-their price is right!! I want everyone to know this place is a hidden gem. 5 stars!!”

What Is Vision Insurance

There are two main types of vision insurance: vision benefits, which are an add-on to a regular health insurance plan, and stand-alone vision plans. Stand-alone plans are offered by both for-profit companies and non-profit organizations, while vision benefits are typically offered through employers.

Both types of insurance cover the cost of routine eye exams and discount the price of glasses, contact lenses, and other vision-related purchases. However, stand-alone plans typically have a wider range of coverage and may cover the cost of vision correction surgery, while vision benefits may only cover a portion of the cost.

If youâre considering getting vision insurance, itâs important to compare the different types of coverage and decide which one is right for you.

What Do Eye Exams At Walmart Cover

A Walmart eye exam covers both a visual acuity test and an eye health evaluation. The visual acuity test measures your ability to see clearly at different distances, while the eye health evaluation checks for common conditions like glaucoma and cataracts.

If you need a more comprehensive exam, it may include additional tests, such as a refraction test to determine your prescription for glasses or contact lenses. The cost of a comprehensive exam can range from $50 to $200, depending on the type of tests included.

Financial Help To Get Regular Eye Exams And Corrective Wear

After the passage of the Affordable Care Act , vision insurance was slowly phased in as one of the health care marketplaces options. However, oral and vision care are not considered essential health benefits for adults that standard health insurance must cover. Instead, the marketplace offers these types of insurance separately, with a tax credit as applicable based on income. For children, pediatric health insurance covers vision and dental care, as required by the ACA.

If you still cannot get vision insurance or missed the ACA application window, there are other options to get lower cost eye exams, financial aid for eye exams, and even free exams.

If inexpensive or low-cost eye exams are out of reach, the National Eye Institute maintains a list of organizations that provide free eye exams and, often, free glasses.

Does Medicare Pay For Glasses And Eye Exams

While Original Medicare does not cover routine vision care, which includes eyeglasses and eye exams, many Medicare Advantage plans offer vision coverage.

Medicare Part B will cover the cost of one pair of corrective lenses following a cataract surgery to implant an intraocular lens. The benefit includes one set of corrective lenses with standard frames or one set of contact lenses. In such a case, you would pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after you meet your annual Part B deductible.

Medicare Advantage plans often include vision coverage. These plans are sold by private insurance companies and include all the same coverage as Original Medicare while also adding some benefits not found in Original Medicare. These additional benefits may often include vision, dental, hearing, prescription drug coverage and more.

Medicare Advantage vision coverage will vary by plan, but coverage for annual eye exams, eyeglasses and contact lenses are often included. They also can include discounts on laser eye surgery or other procedures.

Medicare Advantage costs typically include a monthly premium along with a deductible and coinsurance or copayments.

You can compare Medicare Advantage plans online to find out what the plans available near you cover and where they are accepted.

Not all vision centers have an optometrist within, so check with your local Walmart first.

Keep in mind that you can visit any Walmart in your area, so if you dont like the Vision Center staff at a particular Walmart, try a different one.
