There Is No Magic Pixie Dust

Do buy a quality non-glare coating. Non-glare coatings allow you to see better, look better, and make for a better pair of glasses. Get the best non-glare coating you can afford. If you can afford it, get the good coating on every pair you have. Just like lenses, your optician should be able to tell you what brand and what type of non-glare coating you are getting and give you information about your coating. If you must choose between a cheap non-glare coating or none at all choose none at all. Cheap AR or non-glare coatings do nothing but scratch, smudge and smear.

Do ask about which lens you are getting. If your optician cannot tell you then you are probably being sold a very low-end product. Today the lenses being sold may not be a brand name but may still be of extremely high quality. Listen for terms like house or independent free-form.

Do try to buy a lens produced in the last year or two. Progressive lenses are still getting improvements, so many new designs are actually easier to wear than those made just a few years ago.

Do know that in the US your doctor determines your prescription, not your optician. So please do not get angry with them when a new prescription does not work for you. It would be like yelling at your pharmacist because your antibiotic did not cure your cold.

Do realize that if you are presbyopic and that if you have a change in prescription, that one area of your vision will be better and one will be worse!

Which Factors Influence The Eye Exam Cost In Ontario

Price fluctuation is a common occurrence in the world of eye exams, and there are various reasons why this might be the case. Lets take a look at some of the critical factors that influence the price youll have to pay for eye care:

New or Recurring Patients

If youre a new patient, you can expect to pay a slightly higher fee for your eye exam than someone who is returning for a follow-up appointment. This is because the initial consultation often takes longer and involves more tests than subsequent visits.

The location of the clinic can also impact the overall cost of the exam. Ontario optometrists who practise in urban areas tend to charge more than those based in rural locations. This is because overheads, such as rent and staff expenses, are often higher in busier areas.

The type of clinic you go to can also affect the eye checkup cost youll be charged at the end. Retailers and vision centres, such as Walmart and Costco, often offer lower prices than private offices. Thir fees are cheaper because they have the buying power to negotiate bulk discounts on supplies and equipment.

The Best Places For Eye Exams In 2022

  • Eye exam cost: About $50 to $100
  • Perk: Ability to bring your own frames
  • Number of locations: 558 throughout the U.S.

Why We Chose It: Costco Optical ranks as the best overall place to get an eye exam because of its convenience and its wide selection.

  • Non-professional warehouse feel

  • Membership required for purchases

Costco is a wholesale American company offering a broad variety of merchandise. The company operates as a membership-only warehouse club with retail outlets across the world and opened its first optical lab in 1988.

Costco Optical now ranks as one of the largest optical companies in the United States. It is important to note that most Costco Optical locations will see patients without Costco memberships, although a membership is required to fill an eyeglass prescription or purchase contact lenses. In most states, the company employs independent doctors of optometry within or near the store.

The optical departments offer a wide range of eyeglass frames for the whole family. The company claims to offer the latest technology in high-definition lenses. For prices call your local Costco.

Costco also allows you to bring your own frames to fill with new lenses. And, it offers a discount if you purchase multiple frames on the same day. Most major insurance is accepted. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with reduced hours on weekends.

Financial Help To Get Regular Eye Exams And Corrective Wear

Online Eye Exams Will Change the Way We Buy Glasses

After the passage of the Affordable Care Act , vision insurance was slowly phased in as one of the health care marketplaces options. However, oral and vision care are not considered essential health benefits for adults that standard health insurance must cover. Instead, the marketplace offers these types of insurance separately, with a tax credit as applicable based on income. For children, pediatric health insurance covers vision and dental care, as required by the ACA.

If you still cannot get vision insurance or missed the ACA application window, there are other options to get lower cost eye exams, financial aid for eye exams, and even free exams.

If inexpensive or low-cost eye exams are out of reach, the National Eye Institute maintains a list of organizations that provide free eye exams and, often, free glasses.

National Average Cost Of Glasses Without Insurance

The U.S. average cost for eyeglasses varies significantly based on various factors such as your prescription, frames, lenses, region you live in and eyewear brand you purchase.

The average cost of glasses without insurance is $242, according to statistics from VSP. Thats for frames only. For basic, single lenses, its $113. That means the total will run you on average about $351 for a complete pair of glasses if you dont have vision insurance.

However, prices truly run the gamut. A Consumer Reports survey reported:

  • Readers spent a median of $69 for a complete pair of glasses at Zenni
  • Average cost of glasses without insurance at Costco was a median $184
  • Average cost of $400 for frames and lenses at eye doctors and independent eyeglass shops

If dont have a prescription and need to schedule an eye exam near you, thats an additional charge.

Why the huge disparity?

Prices go up when you add on higher-quality lenses, fancy coatings, designer brands, and so forth.

For example, with a prescription in hand, some retailers advertise bare-bone glasses as cheap as $6.95. Some, like Warby Parker, can start at $95 for a single-vision pair. However, if you order progressive lenses from WP, those prices jump to nearly $300far more than most retailers.

Furthermore, bifocal or trifocal glasses, as well as specialty glasses for specific eye conditions, may cost more than other glasses.

How Much Does A Cheap Eye Exam Cost

On average, you can expect to pay around $80 for an eye exam without insurance.

If youre being fitted for contacts or renewing your contact lens prescription, you could be looking at an additional fee ranging from $50 to $150.

The exact price of your eye exam will vary depending on where you live. I called optometrist offices near Lexington, Kentucky Atlanta, Georgia and Denver, Colorado, to get an idea of the average eye exam price at each store.

Here are the prices I found for a basic comprehensive eye exam in June 2022.

$75 $88

In addition to these stores, Americas Best offers a free eye exam when you buy two pairs of glasses, and 1-800-Contacts offers an online eye exam for $20.

Does Medicare Cover Eye Exams

Medicare covers a medical eye exam, which can be completed by an optometrist or ophthalmologist, but will not cover a refraction, which is part of a vision exam resulting in a prescription for glasses. You may be charged extra for a “refraction fee” if using Medicare coverage. Or, if you have a secondary provider, that may cover the refraction fee. This fee can vary by region and provider. Usually, your provider will inform you of this fee before the examination.

Why Do Progressive Lenses Cost So Much

Getting Glasses at Visionworks was So Easy + Let

Progressive lenses can be an incredible boon to people with astigmatism and other refractive errors, but they also tend to be expensive. Good-quality progressive lenses can cost up to $1200considerably more than your average pair of standard lenses.

Whats the reason for the price tag on progressive lenses? Moreover, is paying extra for progressive lenses worth it? Best For Convenience: Walmart Vision Center

Walmart Vision Center

  • Lesser known frame brands

  • High staff turnover

Perhaps the most well-known discount retail eye clinic, Walmart Vision Center began operating in 2001. Found in most Walmart stores across the nation, the clinic offers eye exams conducted by self-employed optometrists who lease space near the vision center, or who are employed directly by Walmart.

If you already have a prescription, you can purchase frames and lenses without paying to have an eye exam. For the cost of basic eye exam and contact exams, contact the Walmart nearest you. As for eyeglasses, frames start at roughly $12 for women and $20 for men. And, prices seem to be based on frame materials.

While most locations offer a big selection of frames, including ones for kids, you wont find many elite name brands. If you prefer to purchase your frames online, Walmart Vision Center will fill them with your prescription for a nominal fee plus the cost of the lenses you select. Contact lenses begin as low as around $20 per box, but that price varies depending on the brand.

Walmart Vision Center honors most major insurance plans, but only for eye exams and in-store purchases. Vision center hours are typically Monday through Sunday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

How Do I Schedule An Eye Exam And What Are Their Hours

While walk-ins are welcomed when available, youd be smart to call ahead and schedule your next eye exam.

This brings us to the next logical question, what are the Costco Optical hours and are they different that the regular warehouse hours?

In many cases, the exam hours are different than the warehouse hours but the hours that they are open to actually sell glasses are the same.

At my Costco, exams are available from 10 am 7 pm Monday-Friday, 9:45 am 5 pm on Saturday, and 10 am 3 pm on Sunday.

Just call your local Costco to schedule your appointment and ask what hours they are open.

Consumers Guide To Buying Glasses: About Frames

Frame pricing is consistent throughout the industry. Almost all optical retailers mark up frames along similar guidelines. It is common to find identical frames selling for within a few dollars of each other in local markets. Unless the frame is unique to a very small vendor, chances are excellent that at least one other shop in town is selling the same frame. A little price comparison is always a good idea.

Frames are made by the millions, in huge factories located all over the globe. They are rarely hand-crafted in the back room at the shop.

How Do Ontario Prices Fare In Comparison To Other Cities

In terms of affordability, you might be pleased to hear that Ontario eye exam prices fall on the low end of the spectrum compared to other cities across Canada.

For instance, an eye exam in Toronto can cost anywhere from $75-250, while Vancouver is slightly pricier at $90-310. But if you were to head to Montreal or Halifax, the prices are even higher, costing around $120-320 and $70-250, respectively.

On a national level, the Canadian Association of Optometrists estimates that the average cost of an eye exam is $200. So when you compare this to the numbers in Ontario, its evident that the province offers good value for money.
