When Should You Have Your Eyes Examined As An Adult

How often should you have your eyes checked as you get older? Routine eye screenings are crucial to preserving your sight. The good news is that many vision insurance plans cover part or all the cost of these exams. Even if you may be feeling healthy and have no symptoms of vision problems, and you dont wear glasses, contacts or have a family history of eye disease, it might be a good idea to have your eyes checked:10

Before age 40: Every two to four years

From age 40 to age 54: Every one to three years

From age 55 to 64: Every one to two years

After age 65: Every six to 12 months

If you notice changes in your vision, or if its been a while since you had your eyes checked, you may want to consider scheduling an appointment for a comprehensive, dilated eye exam.

What Medicare Vision Coverage Is Available Under Original Medicare

The Medicare Advantage program was created by Congress in 2003 to offer beneficiaries an alternative way to get their Original Medicare benefits, according to the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services. When you enroll in a UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plan, you get not only your Medicare Part A and Part B benefits but many UHC plans carry additional benefits, such as routine vision care, prescription drug coverage, and more, depending on the plan you select.

Under Original Medicare, Medicare vision coverage is limited to medically necessary expenses involved in the treatment of injuries and diseases of the eyes. For example, Medicare Part B may cover eye exams to screen for glaucoma if youre at high risk for the disease, or diabetic retinopathy if you have diabetes. Part B may also cover artificial eyes when medically necessary and obtained from a Medicare-approved supplier.

Medicare generally covers medically necessary cataract surgery, as well as one pair of corrective lenses after the surgery.

In most cases, however, Original Medicare doesnt cover routine vision care services such as:

  • Annual eye examinations and screening tests for glaucoma
  • Prescription eyewear

Know What Your Vision Plan Covers

To get the most out of your vision plan benefits, youll need to know everything that your vision plan covers. UnitedHealthcare offers two vision plans. One plan covers glasses or contacts. The other plan covers both glasses and contacts.

Do you have a glasses or contacts plan? You might think about switching to the vision plan that covers both glasses and contacts when your current vision plan ends.

Even if youre a dedicated contacts wearer, you still need a pair of up-to-date glasses. Lets say your contact lenses sometimes cause dry eyes. You may want to slip on a pair of glasses for a while to be more comfortable. What if you fall asleep wearing your contacts? You might wake up with irritated eyes and need to give your eyes a break from contact lenses for a day.

Health Insurance Premium Payment

Get Medicare with Vision Coverage from UnitedHealthcare

The Health Insurance Premium Payment program is a Medicaid program that helps families pay for private health insurance. This program is for families who have:

  • A parent or a spouse with private health insurance
  • A child or a spouse with Medicaid

Medicaid will pay the family’s private health insurance if the total cost of that insurance is less than the total cost of care with Medicaid. The total cost of the private insurance includes the premium, coinsurance and deductibles.

If approved, Medicaid may pay the private health insurance costs for the entire family and not just for the family members who get Medicaid. The family will get services through the private health insurance plan.
