United Health Care Vision Plans

What Medicare Vision Coverage Is Available Under Original Medicare

Get Medicare with Vision Coverage from UnitedHealthcare

The Medicare Advantage program was created by Congress in 2003 to offer beneficiaries an alternative way to get their Original Medicare benefits, according to the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services. When you enroll in a UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plan, you get not only your Medicare Part A and Part B benefits but many UHC plans carry additional benefits, such as routine vision care, prescription drug coverage, and more, depending on the plan you select.

Under Original Medicare, Medicare vision coverage is limited to medically necessary expenses involved in the treatment of injuries and diseases of the eyes. For example, Medicare Part B may cover eye exams to screen for glaucoma if youre at high risk for the disease, or diabetic retinopathy if you have diabetes. Part B may also cover artificial eyes when medically necessary and obtained from a Medicare-approved supplier.

Medicare generally covers medically necessary cataract surgery, as well as one pair of corrective lenses after the surgery.

In most cases, however, Original Medicare doesnt cover routine vision care services such as:

  • Annual eye examinations and screening tests for glaucoma
  • Prescription eyewear

Stop Health Care Fraud

Fraud increases the cost of health care for everyone and increases your Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program premium.

Here are some things that you can do to prevent fraud:

  • Do not give your plan identification number over the telephone or to people you do not know, except to your providers, plan, BENEFEDS, or OPM.
  • Let only the appropriate providers review your clinical record or recommend services.
  • Avoid using providers who say that an item or service is not usually covered, but they know how to bill us to get it paid.
  • Carefully review your explanation of benefits statements.
  • Do not ask your provider to make false entries on certificates, bills or records in order to get us to pay for an item or service.
  • If you suspect that a provider has charged you for services you did not receive, billed you twice for the same service, or misrepresented any information, do the following:
  • If the provider does not resolve the matter, call us at 1-866-249-1999 or TTY 711 and explain the situation.
  • Do not maintain as a family member on your policy:
  • Your former spouse after a divorce decree or annulment is final or
  • Your child over age 22 .
  • If you have any questions about the eligibility of a dependent, please contact BENEFEDS.

Be sure to review Section 1, Eligibility, of this brochure, prior to submitting your enrollment or obtaining benefits.

Is Unitedhealthcare Vision The Same As Spectera

They are closely related. According to the UHC website, all providers in Specteras Eyecare Network also accept UnitedHealthcare vision.

UnitedHealthcare owns the Spectera network, which is made up of vision care providers for routine eye exams, prescription updates, glasses, contacts, and so on. They also provide coverage for vision emergencies through their medical network. The separation provides a clear division between the two types of eye care to simplify claims and billing for members.

What Providers Accept Unitedhealthcare Vision Insurance

The UnitedHealthcare provider network includes more than 1.3 million doctors and other health care professionals and 6,500 hospitals and health care facilities nationwide. When it comes to UnitedHealthcare vision care providers, UHC Medicare plan members have access to local private practices and large retail chains like Walmart, Costco, Visionworks, Target Optical and more.

In fact, UnitedHealthcare recently expanded its network of online and in-store vision providers to include LensCrafters, 1-800 Contacts and GlassesUSA. The UHC network now includes 96% of the nations top retailers, and 99% of UHC plan members in major markets have access to a network provider within two miles of their home.2

You can use the provider search tool at www.uhc.com/find-a-doctor to search for eye doctors, ophthalmologists and other health care providers near you. You can also search for eye doctors near you by logging into your myuhc online account or by using the UnitedHealthcare app.

Unitedhealthcare Golden Rule Vision Insurance Cost

The cost of vision insurance varies by state and factors such as your age, gender, and whether or not you use tobacco. We used the companys website quote calculator to get an idea of the fee range, and it appears to be pretty stable across demographics. For reference, we looked at prices for both men and women, in Tulsa and Philadelphia, ages 65 and 85, and the quotes were the same for all groups:

    • Plan A: $11.40 monthly premium
    • Plan B: $15.70 monthly premium

You can add a partner or, in most states, a dependent under the age of 26 for around $7.20 per month for Plan A, or $9.90 per month for Plan B. The monthly premium for UHC vision insurance is the same whether you purchase the insurance by itself or as an add-on to a UnitedHealthcare dental insurance plan. You must commit to paying 12 consecutive monthly premiums in most states. UnitedHealthcare vision insurance is renewable for life.

Which Medicare Plans Will Be Most Helpful If You Need Dental Implants

Medicare Advantage plans with supplemental dental coverage that includes dental implants will be most helpful. You may have to pay an additional monthly premium, and there will always be a maximum dental benefit amount allowed, along with either a copay or coinsurance. If you need dental implants, you will incur some amount of out-of-pocket expense.

Not all MA plans cover dental implants. Some MA plans specifically exclude dental implants, even if they offer other comprehensive dental benefits.

MA plans list dental implants as either a covered item or an exclusion in the Evidence of Coverage document associated with each plan. If dental implants are covered, you will be responsible for a copay or coinsurance until the max annual benefit is reached. You will then be responsible for the remaining costs of the services you receive that year.

Dental coverage is detailed in the EOC, but the terminology, codes, and lists of dental procedures can be overwhelming. It is best to talk with a dental provider who routinely works with insurance companies and understands all the terms and codes associated with prosthodontic procedures.

UnitedHealthcare Vision is a relatively strong choice for vision benefits. It has a national network of more than 80,000 vision providers and offers coverage for all of the things that youd expect, including visits to the optometrist, frames, lenses, and contacts.

The insurer offers two different types of vision coverage, one for people who want to purchase either glasses or contact lenses and one for people who prefer to have both available. The plan that covers both glasses and contacts costs a bit more each month and otherwise offers almost identical coverage for the cost of eye exams, frames, and lenses.

Residents of most states can purchase insurance from UnitedHealthcare Vision without going through their employer. This can make it a good choice for the unemployed, self-employed, or those who dont get vision insurance from their job.

Eye Exams For Individuals With Glaucoma And Diabetes

If youre at risk for glaucoma or diabetes, Medicare Part B can cover annual eye exams once every 12 months. For instance, if you use Medicare Part B for glaucoma eye exams, 80 percent of the exam will be covered. However, youd still be responsible for paying the remaining 20 percent of the Medicare-approved amount after youve met your Part B deductible.
