Tricare Fee Increases For 2023 Revealed

Some military families will see a rise in their health care costs come January, even as theyre stretching their dollars to cover higher prices for food, fuel and other necessities.

Generally, if youve been paying out-of-pocket for Tricare in 2022, youll pay extra in 2023.

Active duty families in Tricare Select dont pay annual enrollment fees, but they will see small co-payment increases, generally by a few dollars, for most services starting Jan. 1. Some will also see increases in their annual deductible, meaning they will have to spend more out of pocket before Tricare starts to pay.

There are also planned increases in co-payments and annual enrollment fees for retirees, their families and others, according to fee schedules just released by the Defense Health Agency.

Active duty service members and their families in Tricare Prime dont pay annual enrollment fees, annual deductibles or out-of-pocket costs for covered services. Families pay only when they get nonemergency care without a referral, use non-network providers without authorization, or use a pharmacy other than a military pharmacy.

Active duty families in Tricare Select dont pay annual enrollment fees either, but working age retirees, their family members and most others do, and those fees are going up.

Tricare for Life members dont pay enrollment fees.

When Is Open Enrollment For Tricare

For this years open enrollment, TRICARE is in sync with many other insurance companies. The dates for open enrollment begin November 14 and end December 13.

If you experience a sudden life change outside of the open enrollment season, you may be able to change your coverage. A Qualifying Life Event that would allow you to change your coverage would be something like the birth of a baby or moving.

Pregnancy, however, is not considered a QLE, so if youre planning for a pregnancy in 2023, this open enrollment season would be the time to enroll in prenatal coverage.

FEDVIP also maintains a list of qualifying QLEs that allow you to enroll in the FEDVIP program, or to make changes to your existing FEDVIP plan outside of open season.

Since each Federal benefits program follows its own law and regulations, do not assume that the FEDVIP QLEs will be the same as the TRICARE ones. For example, retirement is not a QLE under the FEDVIP, whereas it is a primary reason under TRICAREs list.

The timeframe for requesting a QLE change with FEDVIP is from 31 days before to 60 days after the event.

What Is Open Season And What Does It Mean For Military Members And Military Retirees

New Dental and Vision Coverage Options Webinar

Open season, or open enrollment, is the time of year when participants can change their healthcare plans.

Tricare participants can change their healthcare selection once per year unless they experience a qualifying life event, such as a new job, job loss, marriage, or divorce. Open enrollment helps healthcare providers reduce costs by maintaining consistent enrollment throughout the year. It also reduces the associated costs of people changing plans at will.

Current Tricare members need to be aware of two open enrollment seasons, Tricare Open Season and the Federal Benefits Open Season.

When Is Open Enrollment And What Do I Need To Do

Tricare open season for enrollment changes is from Nov. 14 to Dec. 13, 2022. The FEDVIP program has the same open-enrollment dates.

During open enrollment, take time to review your current healthcare selection and ensure it still meets your needs.

    You have three options:

  • Do nothing. If you want to stay in your current Tricare healthcare plan, you dont have to take any action. Youll continue in your current health plan through 2023 or as long as youre eligible.
  • Enroll in a plan. If youre eligible for a Tricare Prime option or Tricare Select but arent enrolled, you can enroll in a plan now.
  • Change plans. If youre already enrolled in a Tricare Prime option or Tricare Select, you can switch plans between individual and family enrollment.
  • You dont need to take any action if you want to continue using your current plan. Your current enrollment should automatically roll over for next year.

Remember that you cant change your healthcare plan outside the open season unless you experience a qualifying life event. Now is the time to enroll if you arent enrolled in a Tricare plan.

Finally, you can change plans if doing so is a better option for you and your family.

Anticipated Dental Services For The Upcoming Year

It is helpful to understand your specific dental needs in order to make an informed decision. FEDVIP offers standard and high option plans. If you know you will need major dental work done, you might want to select a high option plan that may cover more of the cost for major restorative procedures. If you need only preventive dental care, a standard option plan may make more sense.

Look for limitations, such as annual maximums or orthodontic lifetime maximums, to ensure that you are not paying out-of-pocket after you’ve reached a plan’s limit.

Also, check whether the plan has any waiting periods that may be a barrier to receiving immediate dental care.
