There are three international standards that help to provide the foundation for the development of quality standards for project. These are:

  • PMBOK The Project Management Body of Knowledge created by the Project Management Institute.
  • ISO 10006:2003 Guidelines for Quality Management in Projects
  • ISO 21500:2012 Guidance on Project Management

The Project Management Centre of Excellence should develop quality standards for all project processes and documents. Examples of project quality standards:

Project Team

  • Project roles and responsibilities are defined, documented, and communicated to all stakeholders.
  • Each project team members competency is compared against competency requirements.
  • Project team competency gaps are closed through training, mentoring and/or coaching.
  • All project team staffing-related issues or risks have been appropriately identified and managed.

Scope Statement

  • The project goal identifies, in a single statement, what is the project and why it is important.
  • Each deliverable will identify the work to be accomplished and how it will be measured.

Project Plan

  • All lower level tasks will be no more than 5 days in duration.
  • All tasks will have a resource identified
  • All tasks will have a predecessor and successor
  • There will be no more than double the number of milestones to the number of deliverables.

Honest Tea: To Create And Promote Great

Honest Tea’s mission statement begins with a simple punch line connoting its tea is real, pure, and therefore not full of artificial chemicals. The brand is speaking to an audience that’s tired of finding ingredients in its tea that can’t be pronounced and has been searching for a tea that’s exactly what it says it is.

Not only does Honest Tea have a punny name, but it also centers its mission around the name. For some time, the company even each year in an effort to be “transparent about our business practices and live up to our mission to seek to create and promote great-tasting, healthier, organic beverages.”

Revisit Your Vision Often As Your Company Evolves

A vision statement sets an organizations sights on the future. However, once that future is reached, the vision needs to continue moving forward. Vision Vs Mission Statement: Definitions

Two of our previous articles focused on mission and vision statements individually. The mission is focused on the purpose of your organization and your competitive advantage. The vision is focused on how you want your organization to develop in the future. To recap further:

Mission statements define why your business exists and why its important, including the problems you aim to solve with your product or service. The mission explains an organizations plan for the present based on what it wants to achieve. Some are long, some are short, some are measurable, others arentmission statements vary by industry but all should be unique and realistic.

Vision statements declare where your organization wants to be in the future, framed in an aspirational, forward-thinking manner. Visions should be creative, ambitious, and have a logical connection to the mission. This isnt a road map , but rather the destination based on your mission. Vision statements help organizations make strategic decisions, aligning effort with goals.

What Is The Purpose Of The Vision Statement

This document identifies the future goals of your organization. The companyâs vision must align with its core values, culture, strategic planning, and mission. Along with the project charter, a vision statement is a document that launches a project.

If necessary, you can revise, review, or return the project vision statement. However, any changes must be minimal since the vision statement directs the companyâs strategic plan, so it needs to be reviewed in detail. This is a living document that leads a company to its next innovation.

Considering companies have unique core values, we have different types of vision statements. For instance, a motivational vision statement will motivate your employees and attract new talents to the company.

People like to work in an organization whose business vision matches their personal values. A powerful vision statement will help your business differentiate itself from others. While all companies want to generate profit, you can always create a special vision statement that your employees and customers will love.

Itâs quite easy to get stuck with the details of your mission statement and the daily challenges of running a company. For that reason, you require a long-term vision statement that guides your efforts and helps with long-term planning.

Why Is A Vision Statement Important For Company Goals

We explained the real purpose of the vision statement in this article, but heres a quick reminder of what we’re trying to achieve with a company vision statement:

  • Improve the decision-making process by setting a ‘limiter’ that helps us to rule out strategic initiatives and opportunities which arent aligned with business long-term goals.
  • Make a succinct statement about what our organization is trying to achieve to help third parties such as investors or the media better understand us.
  • Create a strong North Star that can guide and motivate employees even during difficult times if it is taken seriously.
  • Develop an engaging vision statement thats one of the key elements of thriving company culture.

The bottom line is that a vision statement isn’t just a nice-to-have. It should be included in every business plan and strategy discussion, especially during the strategic planning process, to ensure the organization and its departments stay aligned with its vision and dont get sidetracked.

Tesla: To Accelerate The World’s Transition To Sustainable Energy

A car company’s punny use of the word “accelerate” is just one reason this mission statement sticks out. However, Tesla makes this list because of how its mission statement describes the industry.

It may be a car company, but Tesla’s primary interest isn’t just automobiles it’s promoting sustainable energy. And, sustainable energy still has a “long road” ahead of it hence the world’s “transition” into this market.

Ultimately, a mission statement that can admit to the industry’s immaturity is exactly what gets customers to root for it and Tesla does that nicely.

Helpful Tips For Writing Your Vision Statement

Keep in mind that vision creation doesn’t begin with sitting behind a desk and writing black on white. Reach out to your stakeholders and team members who will play a role in realizing the company’s vision. Organize a workshop, or more if necessary, to brainstorm ideas and gather their feedback.

This toolkit with a template and workbook can help you with brainstorming exercises and navigating the whole process.

As a result, including other stakeholders in the vision-creation process will not only yield ideas but also get buy-in from the beginning since it will be their vision too.

Here are 8 tips to help you write a memorable vision statement:

  • Keep it short – max 2 sentences. Your vision statement should be punchy and easy to remember.
  • Make it specific to your business and describe a unique outcome that only you can provide.
  • Write it in the present tense.
  • Do not use words that are open to interpretation. Saying that you will maximize shareholder return in 2022 doesn’t mean anything unless you specify what that means.
  • Simple is best. There is a tendency for people to overcomplicate things, but you should make your vision clear enough for both people within and outside your organization to understand. Stay away from jargon, metaphors, and business buzzwords.
  • It should be ambitious enough to get people excited, but not so ambitious that it seems impossible to achieve.
  • Start With A List Of Keywords

Ultimately, you’re aiming to craft a few concise sentencesand the process of crafting those sentences will be a lot easier if you have a “word bank” of sorts to draw from as you write. Hold an open brainstorming session with your internal stakeholders to come up with a keyword list.

Make sure your keyword list is comprehensive by subdividing it into smaller categories and making sure you have a good list of keywords for each. At a minimum, you should collect keywords related to:

    • Your product or service

    • Your company’s long-term strategic plan

    • Adjectives that describe your company, product, teams, community, and ideal future

    • Adverbs that describe the way in which your company operates

Just like your list of stakeholders, the number and type of keyword lists you should generate will vary depending on your industry and company. The important thing is to create a document filled with keywords that you can draw from as your writing, if you get stuck trying to communicate an idea, or if you need to replace some jargon-y text.
