What Do Eyeglasses Do

Eyeglasses help correct vision problems, especially among people who have trouble seeing up close or at a distance. The lenses help focus the light sent to the retina to help the eye convert the light into signals sent to the brain. By focusing the light, it helps provide patients with clearer vision.

What Are Reading Glasses

Reading glasses are single-vision lens that does not require a prescription from an optometrist. Some stores carry reading glasses of varying strengths, which can help people having issues seeing words and objects up close. However, prescription reading glasses may be necessary if your eyes require different prescriptions for each lens.

What To Consider When Choosing An Ophthalmologist In Brooklyn

When its time for an eye procedure, its very important to pick the right ophthalmologist. You want your vision in the hands of an experienced, understanding and highly competent eye doctor. Experience is a key factor to look for when choosing the right ophthalmologist. Look for a doctor who has years of experience and thousands of successful procedures under their belt. Pioneering Treatment For Fuchs Dystrophy

We are leaders in diagnosing and treating Fuchs dystrophy, a condition that ultimately leads to vision loss and is the most common reason for a corneal transplant in the United States. For people with this condition, the cells in the corneas endothelial layer gradually die off. These cells normally pump fluid out of the cornea to keep it clear. When these cells die, fluid builds up and the cornea thickens and swells, leading to cloudy or hazy vision, eye glare, and eye pain.

Our experts pioneered a minimally invasive surgical treatment for Fuchs dystrophy, called Descemet stripping only . This treatment involves removing the affected central corneal endothelial cells, which allows healthier peripheral cells to migrate in. Rather than relying on a donor cornea, DSO allows a persons own cells to rejuvenate their cornea. The selective removal of damaged tissue can effectively restore corneal function while eliminating the risks associated with corneal transplant, which include tissue rejection and blindness.

As leaders in this area, our team conducts research on DSO as an alternative to corneal replacement through a multicenter, multinational clinical trial.

Q& a With Your Optometrist

Q: What are the common symptoms of OCULAR allergies? A: Excessive tearing, frequent eye rubbing, constant irritation especially in the corners of your eyes closest to the nose, lid swelling or puffy eyes, and red or pink eyes are some of the most common ocular allergy symptoms.

Q: What is the difference between seasonal and perennial allergies? How would I know the difference? A: Simply put, seasonal allergic conjunctivitis is a more common and persistent form of ocular allergies that occurs during changes in season, which include outdoor weeds, grasses, and tree pollen. Whereas perennial allergic conjunctivitis is a more mild and chronic presentation that occurs year-round from common indoor allergens, such as animal dander, molds, fungus, and even dust mites.

Q: Why does allergy season affect my eyes? A: Its that time of the year for allergies, and for those who suffer, its more than just sneezing. It can mean months of itchy, watery, and puffy eyes. Because many of the allergens are in the air, they easily get into the eyes and cause problems. For many people, a sudden case of red and watery eyes can feel like an infection when really its just allergies. Eye allergies, known as allergic conjunctivitis, can often be treated with over the counter medication, but for some, it is not enough. Let us help you manage your allergies this season.
