Navigating At Night With Night Vision

Cruising at night or in very low-light situations, such as fog, is nerve-racking for most boaters. Myself included. Most boaters will avoid traveling with limited visibility but sometimes it happens. For instance, I vividly remember arriving at a destination in the Gulf Islands much later than anticipated because of a rough crossing.

There are lots of different ways to increase our vision such as spotlights, radar, and thermal imaging. Many powerboats come stock with a searchlight and many sailboats will use a handheld spotlight. Spot lights do have some limitations as their light beams are narrow, hence called spot light. The challenge with this is that you dont see what is not illuminated. What is worse is that the amount of light produced by the spotlight dramatically reduces our own low light vision. For this reason, I only use a spotlight when approaching an anchorage or nearing a dock, when I wont have to rely on my low light vision anymore.

Radar has been the traditional choice of boaters, to avoid objects in low or no visibility situations. Most chartplotters allow you to overlay radar on the electronic chart so you can compare the radar images alongside the aids to navigation and chart info. However, radar doesnt always pick up small boats without radar reflectors or driftwood at sea.

Boat Safer And Avoid Danger

Day or night FLIR thermal imaging detects hazards like jetties, rocks, navigation aids and more. Charged by daylight these objects continue to emit infrared heat all night long.

Thermal imaging instantly detects kayaks, paddleboards, and personal watercraft. The kayakers own body heat makes him a bright target for FLIR thermal imaging.

Thermal imaging is the fastest way to detect a person in the water. FLIRs InstAlert color palette can even highlight the hottest target in a scene in red, making detection faster and easier.

Night Vision For Boating

If you’ve ever been on the water at night after dark , you know it’s anything but comfortable. It really doesn’t matter how many years experience you have on the water, boating at night, in the dark, is different and quite honestly, scary at times.

Modern electronics help curb this anxiety. Today’s chartplotters are highly accurate and the latest radar technologies like the Garmin Fantom featuring MotionScope leverages the Doppler effect so it can detect whether objects are moving toward you or away from you, rather than just painting an object stationary on the screen, it’s super impressive and I now run an 18″ Fantom Radome on my vessel – it’s awesome.

As good as these technologies are, there really is nothing like being able to see with your own eyes. Adding night vision to your boat to have as an additional piece of safety equipment, in my opinion, is a must have.

I bring up comfort simply because that is where I get the most value personally. I’m well trained on traditional marine electronics, but having night vision so I can look up and see beyond my MFD adds a level of comfort and lowers boating at night stress levels by 99%.

It’s to no surprise that we really only see night vision on larger, more expensive private boats as even the entry level for night vision devices are uber expensive to the tune of thousands of dollars at the very low end.
