FEDVIP dental insurance plans are serviced by private companies. These companies often offer both DHMO and PPO coverage. Lets take a look at the differences.

  • Dental health maintenance organizations : DHMOs have a set network of dental service providers that accept your insurance. When you sign onto a DHMO plan, your insurance provider gives you a list of dentists in your network who accept your insurance plan. If you need dental work or services, you must go to one of the dentists in your network. Otherwise, you cannot use your benefits. DHMOs are usually the most affordable dental insurance options youll find but service areas can be quite limited.
  • Preferred provider organizations : You can choose to see any dentist youd like if you have a PPO plan though you can almost always save money by visiting an in-network provider. PPO plans are usually more expensive than DHMO plans, but they might be worth the extra expense if you already have a dentist you like.

Do They Have Affordable Rates For What You Need

Saving money is a plus for dental coverage, but youll want to ensure you dont choose cost over what the plan includes. Carefully consider the options provided, including the deductible, copays and out-of-pocket cap. Coverage plans vary in the percentage of the cost covered for fillings, orthodontia, root canals and even preventive care services. If applicable, youll also want to consider annual maximums and the waiting period for services.

What Is Supplementary Health And Dental Insurance

If you live in Ontario, you are probably covered under the government-funded Ontario Health Insurance Plan . When you are approved for OHIP, youll get an Ontario health card which enables you to go to a doctor, clinic, hospital or emergency room, and receive medical attention, tests and surgeries at no cost to you.

But OHIP only partially covers or doesnt cover some medical services like prescription drugs and vision care, and it does not cover dental care. To pay for medical needs and dental care that OHIP doesnt cover, you may want to consider purchasing supplementary health insurance also known as extended health insurance, or private health insurance, and supplementary dental insurance.

You might have supplementary health and dental insurance through your employer, known as group insurance, or you may decide to buy your own policies, known as individual insurance. Supplementary health and dental insurance is a way to get the medical services you need, at an affordable price. Military Retiree And Dependent Fedvip Dental And Vision Plans

During Open Season military retirees can enroll in any of eight different vision plans. In addition, family members of uniformed service members, of reserve component members, and survivors who are enrolled in a TRICARE health plan will be able to enroll in any of these eight vision plans. This vision coverage is available as an additional benefit not previously available.

Uniformed personnel will continue to receive dental and vision services through TRICARE.

The dental plans:

  • cover 100 percent of the cost of in-network preventive services,
  • do not have deductibles when using network dentists,
  • cover almost all major dental procedures such as crowns, bridges, dentures, and implants with varying levels of cost sharing,
  • in most cases cover orthodontic costs for both children and adults, and
  • generally provide benefits out-of-network and even abroad at somewhat greater cost

The vision plans:

  • cover an annual eye exam at little or no cost,
  • provide eyeglass lenses and frames at little or no cost ,
  • provide contact lenses at little or no cost,
  • provide discounts for laser surgery, and
  • generally provide benefits out-of-network and even abroad at somewhat greater cost.

Federal Retirement Health Insurance

If you would like dental coverage next year, effective January 1, 2020, you must select and enroll in a Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program plan during the next Federal Benefits Open Season.

Is important that you keep in mind that the Open season runs from If youre currently enrolled in a TRDP plan, you will not be automatically enrolled in a FEDVIP plan for 2020. You must take action and enroll during this period.

Are You Ready for FEDVIP Open Enrollment?

The Federal Employees Dental and Vision Program provides supplemental dental and vision insurance coverage. The FEDVIP is a program which is separate and different from the Federal Employee Health Benefits Program. Dental plans provide a comprehensive range of services. Vision plans provide comprehensive eye examinations and coverage for lenses, frames and contact lenses. Other benefits such as discounts on lasik surgery may also be available.

FEDVIP open season runs concurrently with the open season for the FEHB and the Flexible Spending Accounts for Federal Employees Program .

Brush Up On Federal Employees Dental And Vision Insurance

The Federal Employees Health Benefits program provides a wide range of benefits for federal employees, retirees, and certain family members. However, there are things it doesnt cover, many of which are filled by the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance program. Under FEDVIP, you have the option of enrolling in dental care, vision care or both.

The decision to enroll in the FEDVIP program is entirely up to you. You dont have to be enrolled in an FEHB plan. Better still, you can even enroll in the FEDVIP program after you have retired even though you werent enrolled before retirement.

As with the FEHB, enrollment typically occurs in the benefits open season each fall for the following calendar year, although in both cases enrollments are allowed due to certain life events such as marriage.

Coverage rulesLike the FEHB, FEDVIP offers the choice of self only, self plus one and self and family coverage. If you are in both programs, you dont have to make the same coverage choice. For example, if you have self and family coverage under the FEHB, you could choose self only or self plus one coverage under FEDVIP. Survivor annuitants are also eligible to enroll or continue coverage as long as they are receiving an annuity, either on their own or as a survivor annuitant.

One difference in eligibility is that under FEDVIP, children must be unmarried, dependent on you and under the age of 22. Under FEHB, children can remain covered until age 26.

Federal Employees Dental And Vision

The Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program offers supplemental coverage for dental and vision care expenses to Federal employees, retirees, and their dependents. The program offers three enrollment types: Self Only, Self Plus One, and Self and Family. FEDVIP coverage is applied after Federal Employees Health Benefits coverage, if enrolled. Employees must be eligible for FEHB in order to be eligible for FEDVIP, although FEHB enrollment is not required. Unlike FEHB, there are no agency premium contributions however, rates are competitive since FEDVIP is a group insurance benefit. FEDVIP also offers pre-tax benefits as premiums are withheld on a pre-tax basis.

Eligibility rules for family members under FEDVIP differ from FEHB. As with all benefits, employees are encouraged to review program information before enrolling. Opportunities to enroll or change enrollment are limited to the Federal Benefits Open Season, or a qualifying life event .

BENEFEDS manages the programs secure online portal, enrollments, and premium billing. BENEFEDS is administered by Long Term Care Partners, LLC, with oversight by the Office of Personnel Management.

Learn About Tricare For Life

TRICARE for Life is a health coverage option for eligible uniformed service members and their qualified beneficiaries. TRICARE for Life benefits are only available to those active or former service members who are also enrolled in both Medicare Parts A and B. This is an important distinction from other TRICARE plans. Understanding these requirements and potential benefits can help you to determine the best plan for you and for your family.

With a TRICARE for Life provider, you could pay no additional copayments or costs. However, this is based upon your enrollment in and payment of Medicare Part B premiums. TRICARE for Life eligibility is based primarily upon you qualifying for Medicare Part A and Part B. If you do not qualify for those, then you will not qualify for TRICARE for Life and will have to enroll in a different TRICARE plan. Be sure to confirm all of these eligibility requirements first.

There are a wide variety of supplementary health and dental insurance plans, each with their own level of coverage, but the amount of health insurance you need is a highly personal decision. Only you can decide how much is right for you, but an insurance agent or company may be able to help you make those decisions. Factors to consider when deciding how much coverage you need include:

Eligibility To Enroll In The Fedvip

Federal employees are eligible to enroll in the FEDVIP for dental and/or vision insurance if they are eligible to enroll in the Federal Employees Health Benefits program. They are not required to be enrolled in the FEHB program in order enroll in the FEDVIP. CSRS and FERS annuitants and survivor annuitants are eligible for dental and vision insurance coverage. However, unlike the FEHB program in which an employee who wants to retain FEHB program coverage in retirement must be enrolled in the FEHB program for at least all the five years ending on the employees effective date of retirement, there is no last five-year consecutive enrollment requirement for employees to be enrolled in the FEDVIP during retirement.

A CSRS or FERS spousal survivor annuitants must receive a survivor CSRS or FERS annuity in order to be enrolled in the FEDVIP.

Premiums for FEDVIP dental and vision insurance plans are paid entirely by employees and annuitants. There is no federal government premium contribution for dental or vision plans. Employees have FEDVIP premiums deducted from their gross salary while annuitants and survivor annuitants have their premiums deducted from their annuity and survivor annuity checks on a post-tax basis.
