Eye Drops For Close Up Vision

What Clinical Trials Showed

FDA Approves Prescription Eye Drops To Improve Up-Close Vision

During clinical trials with 750 people from 40 to 55 years old with presbyopia, researchers reported that Vuity helped people read an average of 3 extra lines on an optometrists vision chart in mesopic , high contrast, binocular distance corrected near visual acuity, without losing more than 1 line of corrected distance visual acuity at day 30, hour 3, versus placebo.

A large percentage of patients were able to improve their near vision by 3 lines or more, and the vast majority were able to achieve functional near vision of 20/40 or better, Dr. Dagny Zhu, a an opthalmologist and medical director of NVISION Eye Centers in Rowland Heights, California, told Healthline.

This means that many patients may be able to see well enough to read on their laptops or text messages on their cellphones without having to rely on their reading glasses as often, Zhu said.

However, its important to keep in mind that the response will vary from person to person depending on a few factors, including age and their baseline near vision, she said.

Zhu said Vuity will work best on younger adults with mild to moderate cases of presbyopia.

Ive already started offering the drops to some of my own patients and have been pleasantly surprised to see a noticeable improvement in as little as 15 to 20 minutes, said Zhu.

Which doesnt mean there arent side effects, although experts say they appear to be mild.

Rapoport said the generic version, pilocarpine, has been around for decades.

Vuity: New Eye Drops To Help Presbyopia Patients

A new FDA approved eye drop has been released, called Vuity, formulated to treat adult patients who have presbyopia.

What is Presbyopia and how can Vuity Help me?

Once an adult reaches 40 years of age, their close-up vision typically starts to decline. This change in vision is known as presbyopia, and it impairs the ability to see things that are near to the eyes. While nobody looks forward to vision loss, this is a perfectly normal part of the aging process.

As we age, the lenses in our eyes start to become less flexible. Nearly everyone, even people who have enjoyed perfect vision throughout life, can start to discover that they have to hold food packaging or other items farther away to read them clearly.

Vuity is 1.25%, a once daily drop indicated for the treatment of presbyopia in adults. It is FDA-approved for patients 40-55 diagnosed with presbyopia. Vuity helps you focus on things up close, such as cell phones, books, cooking, menus, etc.

Vuity primarily works by reducing your pupil size to help you see up close. Optimizing pupil size allows improvement in near vision without compromising distance vision.

Has Vuity been Tested?

In clinical studies where patients received one drop of Vuity in each eye once daily, this was measured by the proportion of patients achieving a 3-line gain or more reading a near vision eye chart without losing more than 1 line in a distance vision eye chart at Day 30, 3 hours after dosing.

Growing older and needing reading glasses have often gone hand in hand, but it might not need to anymore.

In October, the US Food and Drug Administration approved Vuity, an eye drop used to treat presbyopia, or age-related blurry near vision. In early December, the drops became available at pharmacies with a prescription for people with age-related blurry vision the first medication of its kind to treat the condition.

Dr. Christopher Starr, an ophthalmologist and spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, said in an email he’s prescribed them to patients and has also been using them himself.

“They work,” Starr said.

Here’s what we know, and what we don’t, about the new eye drops.

If youre one of the millions of people living in the U.S. who struggle with blurry near vision, your life could soon get a whole lot easier.

With a prescription from your doctor, you can now buy U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved eye drops to treat presbyopia an age-related condition that strips your eyes of the ability to clearly see up close from your local pharmacy.

Vuity, developed by pharmaceutical company Allergan, was the first and only eye drops product to be approved by the FDA in October for presbyopia, which affects nearly half of the U.S. adult population, beginning around 40 years old.

Theres no way to stop the normal aging process that leads to the condition its name originates from a Greek word that translates to old eye, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology. But you can regain some visual clarity with the help of glasses, contact lenses or surgery.

The eye drops work within 15 minutes of application and can improve near vision for up to six hours without impacting how you see farther away, a news release says. A Vuity spokesperson told CBS New York the medication will cost about $80 for a 30-day supply.

How Does The Presbyopia Eye Drop Work

The new eye drop to treat presbyopia is a huge advancement in Ophthalmology. Use one drop daily in each eye to help improve near vision. The eye drop reduces your pupil size by contracting certain muscles in the eye to help you see up close. Soon after the drop is administered, a significant improvement in near vision is noticed with a minimal decrease in distance vision. The eye drop treatment for presbyopia is intended to increase daily convenience and freedom from reading glasses. Dr. Eve J. Higginbotham, SM, MD, a professor of ophthalmology at Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania explained that these characteristics of the drops may double as their shortcomings. Higginbotham, who specializes in glaucoma treatment, is well-versed with patients taking required eye drops for treatment and was quick to point out that patients often fall short when put in charge of administering their own treatments.

Theres a question of whether or not people will actually use these drops twice a day in order to see a little better up close, explained Higginbotham. I am sure there may be a small segment of the population that may choose to put drops in twice a day, but for the vast majority of individuals, using drops twice a day may be a challenge.

The latest clinical results suggest the drops are safe and effective, but that leaves the question of who would actually buy them. Glasses remain the most frequently used treatment for presbyopia.

There may be a few individuals, perhaps those in their early 40s who are just beginning the process of needing reading glasses and may not want to put any glasses on, but as that population progresses into their fourth and fifth decade, theyre going to need reading glasses more often, and stronger prescriptions, explained Higginbotham. The question will be whether or not these drops are going to keep up with the progression and the persistent need.

What Happens When You Have Trouble Seeing Up Close

Most people are in their 40s when they start noticing problems seeing clearly up close. As we age, the lenses of our eyes become harder and less flexible, making it more difficult to see up close. These changes can lead to age-related blurry near vision, also known as presbyopia.

The onset and progression of presbyopia is gradual. You may notice the need to hold things like your smartphone or a restaurant menu at arms length to be able to read the words. Or, adding more light may help see a tablet or magazine article more clearly. Eventually, these remedies dont work well enough anymore and reading glasses are a necessary accessory to bring near vision into focus.

If youve noticed changes in vision similar to these and havent been diagnosed with presbyopia, its time to schedule a visit at ReVision. Following a thorough eye exam to ensure the health of your eyes, you will have a conversation with the doctor about your lifestyle and vision goals. Based on these details, the doctor may recommend the presbyopia eye drop as a good option to reclaim your near vision.

Combined Agents In The Treatment Of Glaucoma

Several eyedrops are available that combine the actions of two drugs from different categories. The reasoning behind the use of combined agents is that it is easier for patients to put just one drop in their eyes instead of two it may also be healthier for the eye as less preservative is being applied.

What are the combined medications?

  • Xalacom DuoTrav

For glaucoma medications to work, you must take them regularly and continuously as prescribed by your doctor.

The Clinical Trials :

New eye drops may help reading vision

Vuity eye drops were successfully tested in two phase 3 clinical trials with over 750 presbyopic participants between the age of 40 and 55. A considerably high percentage of the participants of this study group who were given Vuity drops were able to perform better in vision tests compared with those that were given a placebo.

They were able to read more than 3 more lines on an eye chart in low light without compromising their distance vision.

Reducing the pupil size expands the depth of field or the depth of focus, and that allows you to focus at different ranges naturally, George Waring, MD, the lead researcher for the clinical trial, has told reporters from CBS during their interview on Vuity.

Approved Use and Important Safety Information

Look Up And Squeeze The Bottle

Once youre comfortable, the bottle is shaken and open, look up. Some people say that focusing on a specific point on the ceiling can help. Use one hand to pull your lower eyelid down. This forms a pocket to help catch the drop.

Using your other hand, position the dropper over your eye. Slowly squeeze the bottle until one drop falls onto your eye.

Could Eye Drops Replace Your Reading Glasses

If your reading vision has gotten worse with age, you’re not alone. Estimates suggest that half of adults have presbyopia, the medical term for the progressive, age-related loss of near vision.

You likely first noticed the changes while reading small print. Perhaps you responded counterintuitively and held the subject matter farther away, where those blurry letters became clearer.

Such recurring near-vision issues have led many adults to settle on reading glasses as an acceptable long-term solution.

But could new eye drops change your calculation?

The FDA recently approved pilocarpine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution, prescription eye drops to help treat presbyopia.

“Pilocarpine is the first drop that’s been approved along the spectrum of drops that will eventually be available for improving near vision,” says Dr. Rahul Pandit, an ophthalmologist at Houston Methodist. “However, there are definitely pros and cons to consider before using this new drop.”

Sure, it would be great to get rid of your reading glasses for once. But how do you know if these new drops are actually right for you?

What Are The Limits To Vuitys Use

Buy Murine Eye Drops from Canada

Vuity isnt an option for everyone. The drop works best for younger people, ages 40 to 55, who have mild to moderate symptoms. And much like reading glasses, Vuity wont stop presbyopia from progressing.

Patients should realize that presbyopia is dynamic and that an eye drop will not be a complete cure, says Nandini Venkateswaran, MD, a cornea, cataract, and refractive surgeon at Massachusetts Eye and Ear and an instructor in ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School in Boston.

Nor is Vuity designed to treat other eye issues that may affect people with presbyopia, including myopia , hyperopia , or astigmatism . People with these vision issues still must wear glasses or contact lenses, even if they use Vuity drops.

Since the drops reduce pupil size, they may also make it more difficult to see in the dark. For that reason, they arent recommended for use when driving at night or performing hazardous work in low light, Waring says. Similarly, people with cataracts may experience decreased vision when using Vuity, as the decreased light entering the eye because of the cataract is further reduced by the drop-induced smaller pupil.

The drops shouldnt be instilled when contact lenses are in place. A history of certain eye conditions, such as angle-closure glaucoma or iritis , is usually considered a contraindication for pilocarpine use or a reason not to use it.

Fda Approves Prescription Eye Drops That Improve Close

NEW YORK — The FDA has recently approved a prescription eye drop to improve close-up vision.

As CBS2’s Dr. Max Gomez reported Thursday, it could be life changing medication because most people are certain to have blurry, close-up vision after their mid-40s.

Toni Wright leads a double life on her Western Pennsylvania farm – partly checking on her chickens or cows and working from home as an online retail consultant.

“I have readers everywhere,” said Wright.

It’s the only way Wright, 54, can read things up close.

“I was in denial, because to me, that was a sign of growing older,” Wright said.

In 2019, Wright’s doctor told her about eye drops with the potential to temporarily correct her close-up vision.

“I would not need my readers as much, especially on the computer, where I would always need to have them on,” Wright said.

Wright was one of 750 participants in a clinical trial to test the drug Vuity, the first FDA-approved eye drop to treat age-related blurry, near vision – also known as presbyopia.

“Vuity utilizes the eye’s natural ability to reduce its pupil size,” said Dr. George Waring, the trial’s principal investigator. “Reducing the pupil size expands the depth of field or the depth of focus, and that allows you to focus at different ranges naturally.”

One drop in each eye provides sharper vision for six to 10 hours.

“It’s definitely a life changer… just a convenience to have that option of putting the drops in and being able to go,” said Wright.

Reasons People Use Eye Drops

In farsightedness, you can generally see the result of a flat cornea or short eyeball, which causes light to focus indirectly on the retina.

There are many ways to treat close-up vision like by wearing prescription lenses or eye drops. Wearing prescription lenses treats farsightedness by reducing the curvature of the cornea or the smaller size of the eye.

Eye drops can also be called liquid drops which are applied directly to the surface of the eye. Eye drops usually contain saline to match the salinity of the eye. There are many reasons people use eye drops.

  • Dilating drops during eye exams
  • Lubricating drops for dry eye
  • Redness-relieving drops
  • Antibiotic drops for some infections
  • For long term treatment of glaucoma you can use pressure-lowering drops.

What Are The Side Effects Of Using Pilocarpine Eye Drops To Correct Close

“What does constriction of the pupil do?” asks Dr. Pandit. “It keeps your eye muscles active and closes off some of your peripheral vision, so eye strain and tunnel vision may result for some people.”

The most common side effects reported while using pilocarpine prescription eye drops are:

  • Increased tear production

The drops may also impair your vision in low-light situations, so they’re not recommended for night driving.

“There will eventually be other drops available for improving near vision that work in slightly different ways or with slightly different formulations, which may help overcome some of the unwanted side effects of the pilocarpine drops,” Dr. Pandit adds.

Who Can Benefit From The Presbyopia Eye Drop

New FDA-approved eye drops may improve vision

The new presbyopia eye drop can help adults in their 40s and 50s experience improved near vision, independence from reading glasses, and added daily convenience. Those who take other eye drops can still use the presbyopia eye drop by simply administering the drops 5 minutes apart. Contact lens wearers can also use the drop. Simply remove the contacts prior to administering the eye drop, then wait 10 minutes before putting them back in. Those who have previously had LASIK can also use the drop.

The most common side effects of the eye drop were headache and eye redness. A complete list of possible side effects will be discussed during your consultation. Decide if the presbyopia eye drop is the best solution for your personal vision needs after having a conversation with your doctor.
