In the ocean there is an extraordinary world. Intriguing underwater creatures and organisms display wonderful colours. Blues, reds, yellows, and oranges burst into life at every turn. Yet capturing this magnificence in photographs and on video is a challenge due to the nature of water itself.

Now, in a paper published in Computer Vision and Image Understanding, a team from the Centre for Intelligent Sensing at Queen Mary University of London, UK describe a new method for automatically dehazing, or removing distortion, from underwater images and videos.

Standard methods for dehazing images can be unreliable for use in underwater photography and videography. The parameters that are required by dehazing methods can often be incorrectly estimated as there is also reduced spectral, or colour, information in underwater images as water attenuates different wavelengths of light to different degrees. Incorrectly estimated parameters can result in the introduction of false colours or noise in underwater images.

Focusing in on pure water

The team evaluated their results using images captured in a variety of water types and videos captured onboard an underwater vehicle. Our approach demonstrated superior performance in comparison to state-of-the art approaches to underwater image and video dehazing, says Emberton.

Title: Towards Better Text

Abstract: Generating consistent and high-quality images from given texts is essentialfor visual-language understanding. Although impressive results have beenachieved in generating high-quality images, text-image consistency is still amajor concern in existing GAN-based methods. Particularly, the most popularmetric $R$-precision may not accurately reflect the text-image consistency,often resulting in very misleading semantics in the generated images. Albeitits significance, how to design a better text-image consistency metricsurprisingly remains under-explored in the community. In this paper, we make afurther step forward to develop a novel CLIP-based metric termed as SemanticSimilarity Distance , which is both theoretically founded from adistributional viewpoint and empirically verified on benchmark datasets.Benefiting from the proposed metric, we further design the Parallel Deep FusionGenerative Adversarial Networks , which can fuse semantic informationat different granularities and capture accurate semantics. Equipped with twonovel plug-and-play components: Hard-Negative Sentence Constructor and SemanticProjection, the proposed PDF-GAN can mitigate inconsistent semantics and bridgethe text-image semantic gap. A series of experiments show that, as opposed tocurrent state-of-the-art methods, our PDF-GAN can lead to significantly bettertext-image consistency while maintaining decent image quality on the CUB andCOCO datasets.
