After the surgery I can see perfectly well WITHOUT GLASSES. Dr, Chang is extremely professional and was a joy to work with. I give him my highest recommendation. Thank you Dr. Chang for restoring my vision to 20/20.

Cataract Days For Sight:

Since our inaugural event in 2017, we have partnered with local Ophthalmologists who have generously donated their time, services and supplies to conduct free cataract surgeries for those who are uninsured or underinsured.

This project is especially for those who do not have or cannot obtain medical insurance. We will also accept those who meet a list of eligibility requirements, including a household income of less than 200% of the poverty level.

Our goal is to give the gift of sight to those who would otherwise be unable to obtain such services. This will give them the chance to care for themselves and branch out into the workforce.

Cataract Days V, free cataract eye surgery for Hawaiis patients in need, is scheduled for September 4, 2021. To apply for this servicePlease do not call the surgeon directly. We wish to continuously extend our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to our former Cataract Days surgeons. 2020 Highlights!

How Does Cataract Surgery Work

Cataract surgery is the best way — and currently the only one — to remedy cataracts from the eyes. The vast majority of cataract surgeries are highly successful, allowing patients to regain vision that they may have thought was lost forever.

Cataract & Vision Center of Hawaii is the first practice in the state of Hawaii to offer the most advanced laser cataract surgery available today. The Catalys® Precision Laser System uses lasers to perform parts of the surgery that once had to be done with handheld blades and instruments. This bladeless computer-controlled laser is combined with cutting edge 3D imaging to get a level of precision thats never been possible with standard cataract surgery.

The Catalys® technique also allows for a high degree of customization based on the patient’s unique eye shape and dimensions. This technique also lowers the risk of complications and allows for faster healing and quicker visual recovery. Additionally, if patients have astigmatism in addition to cataracts, both conditions can be treated at once, which eliminates the need for vision correction.

Why Do Cataracts Develop

June is Cataract Awareness Month Hawaiian Eye Center

Cataracts develop mainly due to age, with about 50% of all people having a cataract by the time they’re age 65. By the time a patient reaches 75, theyre extremely likely to have at least one cataract. Diseases like diabetes are also a common cause of cataracts. Taking certain medications such as steroids on a long term basis may cause cataracts to develop, too. While quite rare, babies can have congenital cataracts. This occurs when the mother has an infectious disease like measles while pregnant.

What Patients Say About Hawaiian Eye Center

Highly recommend this place!!! I was not feeling well yesterday. My eyes were getting red, itchy & I suspected early conjuctivitis. Walked in this morning around 8:04 am without an appointment. The receptionist was very sweet & asked me to fill out papers & confirm information. Within 20 minutes, I was in a waiting room. Dr. Rhee was professional & confirmed my illness. I love that they have state-of-the art equipment. The nurse was so helpful & sweet. She held the door open for me, as I could barely see. I was out of the office within 45 minutes. I would like to thank Dr. Rhee & his entire staff!!!!
