When a person or child comes to see me with double vision, they are also assessed by an orthoptist as well as myself. This is a professional I work with who is trained at measuring and looking specifically at eye movements. The specialist will assess your vision with or without glasses if you wear them so you must bring them with you.

They will look at how your eyes move and how your eye muscles are working and if there is any misalignment between the eyes. This is measured using prisms which are wedge-shaped pieces of glass, of different thicknesses, which bend the light. These devices enable us to measure the angle between your eyes. Other relevant tests may look at your 3D vision to see if you use both eyes together.

Once I have the orthoptist’s report, I will review this with you and go through the history of your symptoms and any other relevant eye problems or medical history that you have. I will then perform a structural assessment of your eye where I look at your eye using a slit lamp. This is a big microscope that enables us to make sure that your eye is healthy and that there’s no other significant cause. This may involve dilating your pupil to get a good look inside the eye and, if necessary, performing a refraction exam where we check your glasses’ prescription.

How Does Double Vision Affect People

Double vision may not always be present and can be intermittent: only occurring at certain times of the day or only in certain directions. Obviously, this can be very disorientating and cause problems with trying to walk, especially down steps. It can come on gradually or happen quite suddenly, which can make it very difficult for the person to carry out their day-to-day activities.

If you do have double vision, it is important not to go behind the wheel and you should tell the DVLA as it can affect your ability to drive.

Causes Of Binocular Double Vision

A common cause of binocular double vision is a squint or strabismus.

This condition occurs when the eyes are not correctly aligned. Strabismus is relatively common in children. However, the condition does not always result in double vision.

Strabismus causes the eyes to look in slightly different directions.

Chronic Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Chronic carbon monoxide poisoning means there has been very low-level exposure to carbon monoxide gas over a long period of time.

Carbon monoxide is a deadly, invisible gas that has no smell and causes unconsciousness and death very quickly. It is usually produced from a faulty furnace or from using a generator or charcoal grill indoors.

In chronic cases, the most likely cause is a gas, oil, or coal furnace that is improperly ventilated.

Carbon monoxide replaces oxygen in the bloodstream, causing suffocation.

Symptoms include headache fatigue body aches nausea and vomiting chest pain dizziness incoordination and mental confusion.

These symptoms are often mistaken for other illnesses such as influenza, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, or dementia. But there is a risk of permanent damage and death if carbon monoxide poisoning is not treated.

Diagnosis is made with a blood test to measure the oxygen content.

How To Stop Anxiety Double Vision

Once you’re sure anxiety is causing your double vision, the only way to stop it is to address the anxiety. Unfortunately, anxiety will continue to trigger the release of adrenaline, and there is no way to prevent eye dilation and related issues from occurring.

There are a few techniques you can try to reduce both the severity of your anxiety and the likelihood of double vision. These include:

  • Breathe Slower Do your best to slow down your breathing as much as possible. That will prevent the effects of hyperventilation. Fight the urge to take deep breaths, and instead take slow, controlled breaths that last about 13 to 15 seconds each.
  • Exercise Exercise is an anxiety reduction tool that doesn’t necessarily have an effect on vision, but can provide some immediate relief for anxiety that could, in theory, reduce some of the double vision you suffer from immediately. While it’s hard to run with balance issues, if you can get in some good exercise you should be able to find some relief from the symptoms.
  • Distract Your Senses Another effective strategy is to simply distract your senses and your mind from your symptoms. Double vision is often perceived because you’re paying so much attention to your vision. Give yourself a break by turning on music, turning on the TV, talking to someone on the phone, and walking around. Make it much harder for yourself to focus on your anxiety symptoms, and your vision issues should soon follow.
