Aetna Medical Dental And Vision Insurance

Standalone Individual Dental And Vision Bundles

Aetna Vision Preferred Coverage for Members

Standalone dental plans are available for purchase. Some even offer plans designed with older adults in mind. In contrast to Medigap, Original Medicare, and a large number of Medicare Advantage plans, standalone plans and bundles ensure youre covered for every type of dental and vision care you need.

Here are three providers that offer dental and vision care, some as part of Medicare Advantage and others as standalone insurance.

Unfortunately, dental problems are a standard part of getting older. While regular dental visits can limit your long-term expenses by helping you identify and treat problems early on, many older people skip going to the dentist because Medicare does not cover any preventative or routine dental care. Of course, leaving oral issues untreated is not the solution, and doing so can hurt your overall health. Thus, lots of older adults are left searching for ways to make their dental care more affordable.

Aetna, a company with over a century in the insurance industry and 50 years providing dental insurance, works to ensure older adults maintain healthy teeth and gums through its variety of dental insurance and discount plans. Based in Hartford, Connecticut, Aetna serves 13 million members across the United States, with 372,000 in-network dental providers.

Dental Issues For Older Adults

As I previously mentioned, aging can be dangerous for our oral health. According to the Center for Disease Control , older adults experience five primary oral health issues:

  • Tooth Decay/Cavities: Close to 100 percent of older adults 65 and older have had a cavity, and one in five currently have untreated tooth decay.
  • Tooth Loss: Nearly 20 percent of adults over age 65 have lost all their teeth and require dentures.
  • Dentures: Unfortunately, missing teeth or dentures can impact your overall nutrition, as people without teeth tend to gravitate toward softer, more chewable food rather than fresh fruits and veggies.
  • Gum Disease: Of all adults over the age of 65, two in three have gum disease. In its mildest form, gingivitis, it can be treated by regular brushing and flossing. Its most severe form, periodontitis, can be far more severe. Without treatment, it often leads to pain, soreness, and even tooth loss.
  • Cancer of the Mouth: Oral cancer is most common in adults over 40. Symptoms include painful and persistent mouth sores and pain, difficulty swallowing, and sore throat.
  • Chronic Disease: Most older adults take prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines, which can cause dry mouth. When your mouth has less saliva, youre more likely to get cavities.

Why Do I Need Dental And Vision Insurance

Get valuable dental, vision and hearing coverage

Older adults are seven times more likely to develop oral cancer, which could be prevented by maintaining regular dental care. The possibility for other problems, such as gum disease, a risk factor for heart disease, also increases nearly 50 percent for individuals over the age of 65. Even dry mouth, a seemingly benign condition, can lead to more cavities, infections, and sores.

Routine dental care has the power to detect and prevent most of these issues. Nevertheless, dental care is rarely cheap. Basic cleaning and exams cost $150-$350 on average, and more complex procedures like bridges and implants can easily make a single dental visit cost over $1,000.

Per the American Optometric Association, adults over 61 years old should receive an eye exam once per year. Thats no surprise since approximately one in three individuals has some type of vision-reducing eye disease by age 65. Plus, many eye conditions, such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and cataracts, are age-related and most treatable if dealt with early.

Unfortunately, vision care is hardly more affordable, with the average eye exam costing between $150 and $200. And the average price tag for basic single lens glasses at an eye doctor or independent eyeglasses shop is nearly $400 without insurance.

Dental And Vision Insurance

Stand-alone dental insurance is available through Aetna Dental Direct. Dental insurance covers all preventive services such as dental exams, X-rays and flouride treatments, so there will be no additional out-of-pocket costs for these services.

Aetna dental coverage isn’t available in every state. For example, residents of Connecticut and New York can’t access these plans. If this is the case in your state, we recommend looking for a different health insurer.

In other states, residents have additional purchasing options. Each plan typically has a different monthly premium, deductible and coinsurance levels.

Aetna also supplies vision insurance policies. However, these plans are only offered in conjunction with employer health insurance and thus cannot be purchased on a stand-alone basis.

Choice Savings And Convenience

Theres a lot to consider when choosing a vision insurance plan for you and your family, like how it fits your budget and your life. So, we designed Aetna Vision Preferred to give you maximum choice, savings and convenience. But dont take our word for it. See why one member thinks its the best choice for them.

Rick Tapnio: That I love about the Aetna Preferred Vision Plan is choice, savings, and convenience. That really narrows down the three most important things for myself and my family, simply because we just, we didn’t have that before on the plan that we had.

John Lahr:Statistics show that close to four times as many people receive a comprehensive eye exam annually as compared to a physical. If they can’t see, that will drive them into an optometrist or an ophthalmologist to get their eye exam, maybe through a vision plan. And we really look at the person in total as we’re really trying to assess what’s going on, not only with their eyes, but what relates from their body, into the eye. Sometimes we can see it in the eye or maybe we’re just looking for something that they gave us a hint on medication that we should be assessing whether it be high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or even diabetes, both type one and type two.

Dental And Vision For Medicare Recipients

Original Medicare doesnt cover routine dental or eye care. This means that without additional coverage, youll be expected to pay full cost for most oral and visual needs, including prescription eyewear.

The good news is there are a few situations where Medicare A or B will help you out with dental or vision needs. Medicare usually covers emergency dental procedures that require a hospital stay or complex surgeries that require dental exams. Additionally, if youre eligible for both Medicaid and Medicare, some dental costs, including dentures, are also typically covered. Medicare Part B will also cover an annual exam for eye diseases, such as macular degeneration or glaucoma.

Who Is Eligible For Aetna Medicare Dental Services

To enroll in an Aetna Medicare Advantage plan, all youll need is your original Medicare number. You can sign up for original Medicare during your initial enrollment period, which starts three months before your 65th birthday.

You may also be eligible for Medicare if youre a younger adult with a chronic illness or a permanent disability. Original Medicare enrollment goes through Social Security. You can enroll in original Medicare parts A and B by filling out a form online or visiting the nearest Social Security office.

What Type Of Health Insurance Plan Should I Get

There are many different types of health insurance plans, and Blue Cross and Aetna offer most of them. Some of the most common types of health insurance are PPO, HMO, and POS plans.

With an HMO plan, your coverage is only valid in-network, which limits the providers you can visit. With a PPO plan, you can choose any provider you want, whether they are in-network or out-of-network. POS plans are a hybrid between a PPO and an HMO. It allows you to get out-of-network care, but you are usually responsible for some of the costs.

The best health insurance plan for you depends on the type of coverage you want and your budget. For instance, if you want peace of mind knowing that you can see almost any provider, anywhere, go for a PPO plan. If you rarely see the doctor and care more about paying a low premium, an HMO might be a better choice. And if you want the best of both worlds, a POS plan could work for you, just know that you will have to pay a portion of the out-of-network care costs.

Can Medicare Advantage Or Medigap Cover Dental And Vision

Medicare Advantage plans, sold by private companies, often include some dental and vision coverage. However, not all plans have these added benefits. Their premiums, benefits, and deductibles vary, as with all health plans, and many people refer to them as all-in-one plans.

Medigap is supplemental insurance created to cover gaps in Original Medicare, such as deductibles and copays. Medigap will cover some coinsurance or deductible costs for emergency oral surgery or treatment of serious eye diseases, but Original Medicare also covers part of those expenses. Medigap does not cover routine eye or dental care.

Tip: You cant use Medigap and Medicare Advantage together. In fact, its illegal for someone to sell you a Medicare Advantage plan if you have Medigap.

Aetna Vs Blue Cross: Policy Management

Aetna Health Plans For Small Business

Aetna and Blue Cross have standard options for policy management. Both companies have an online member portal that allows you to see your policy information, view the status of claims, and make updates to your plan.

You can get in touch with customer service agents for Aetna and Blue Cross by calling their main phone numbers during business hours. Neither company offers 24/7 support or an online chat feature.

With Aetna and Blue Cross, one of the best ways to manage your policy is through the companys mobile apps, which are free to download on iOS and Android devices.

Aetnas app allows you to search for doctors, view your claims, see your plan details, get your ID cards, track your spending, pay approved claims, and even compare costs for medical visits and procedures.

Blue Cross has a different app for each state, and the app features vary. At a minimum, you can find an in-network doctor or urgent care facility, access your claims, download your ID cards, view your policy information, and check your deductible and HSA balance. In some states, the app also allows you to pay your bills, research drug prices, submit out-of-network claims, and get connected with the 24-hour nurse hotline.

Aetna Vs Blue Cross: Enrollment Process

To enroll in an individual health insurance plan from Blue Cross, youll have to do so during the annual open enrollment period. However, you can also purchase coverage outside of open enrollment if you have experienced a qualifying life event. Examples include giving birth, getting married, losing employer-sponsored coverage, getting divorced, and moving to a new state.

If you apply for coverage because you have experienced a qualifying life event, Blue Cross will ask to see documentation verifying the event. So, for instance, if you had a baby, your childs birth certificate would be sufficient. If you lost your job, you could provide a letter of termination from your previous insurance company.

If you qualify for Medicare, you can purchase an Aetna plan during the specific Medicare open enrollment period, which is separate from the individual open enrollment period. If you already receive Social Security benefits, you wont need to verify your eligibility. However, if you are not receiving retirement benefits, or if you qualify for Medicare due to a disability, you will likely need to provide some documentation that proves you qualify for coverage.

Aetna and Blue Cross both offer online quotes and, in some cases, you can purchase a policy through the website. We found the online experience for both companies to be pretty good, but some Blue Cross states have a more outdated website than others.
